Denis Zastavni's work focuses on fundamental and applied research in relation to structural design and its associated dimensions:
- structural reliability according to design approaches
- structural robustness through plastic redistribution
- Integrative geometry-structure-mechanical efficiency-environmental balance approaches.
?
As a result of his research, he and his team have developed an expertise in :
- 3D graphic statics (vectorial approach)
- historical analyses of masonry structures
- hyperstatic problems managed by graphic statics
- timber structural design, particularly in relation to fire safety
- interactive structural analysis related to environmental assessment
- the design methods of Swiss engineer Robert Maillart [1872-1940] - Benvenuto Prize 2008.
?
His research on Maillart's approaches has been the subject of 18 publications intended to be collected in a monograph. His research has highlighted:
1/ the central role of Graphics Static as a tool for structural design, an approach of which Maillart would be the first promoter, that secure the structural arrangement and...
2/ a number of efficiency and methodological factors that lead to the mastery of structural design according to a deterministic approach. This framework allows then to develop obvious architectural qualities.
These results are now a set of theoretical foundations and represent the core of his teachings on structures.

The Research Team is active in the field of structural design and its methods:
- concrete and timber ¨C historical studies ¨C parametric modelling ¨C the application of graphic statics.
