To gain admission to certain UCLouvain courses, you must pass an entrance exam.
Medical and dental entrance exams
Admission is conditional on passing an
Competitive entrance exam for medical specialities
Doctors wishing to register for the competitive entrance exam for medical specialities must apply to the Enrolment Office using a MED-CA application form and read the included regulations. They must first contact the Faculty of Medicine (Armand Latevi Lawson) to find out how to obtain a letter of authorisation to register for the competitive entrance exam from the Commission des masters de specialisation (Specialised Master’s Courses Commission).
Civil engineering entrance exam
Access to civil engineering courses is conditional on passing a special entrance exam organised by the Louvain School of Engineering. For more information, please consult the dedicated page.
French language proficiency exam (EMLF)
In accordance with Article 113, §1 of the decree of 7 November 2013, no one may be admitted to study for a “master didactique” (master's degree in education) or an “agrégation” (AESS) in upper secondary education unless they have first demonstrated a sufficient command of the French language.
Such proof may be provided either by:
- possession of a diploma or certificate mentioned in Article 107, paragraph 1, 1°, 2°, 4° and 8°;
- passing a specific exam organised for this purpose by the academic authorities in accordance with the provisions laid down by the government;
- possession of the certificate referred to in Article 107, paragraph 1, 5°, when issued by a French Community exam board;
- a certificate of successful completion of other French language proficiency tests, the list of which is drawn up by the government;
- possession of a foreign diploma, title or certificate attesting to studies that include sufficient instruction in the French language; the government lays down the minimum requirements that these studies must meet;
- possession of a higher education diploma awarded in the French Community and certifying studies, access to which is subject to proof of sufficient mastery of the French language.
At UCLouvain, for the 2024–25 academic year, the French language proficiency exam will be organised on the following dates:
Day | Duration (in hours) | Start | End | Activity | Lecture hall |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Thursday 19/09/2024 | 4 | 9.30am | 1.30pm | French-language exam for education master’s or AESS | ERAS 54 |
Monday 07/10/2024 | 3 | 10.30am | 1.30pm | French-language exam for education master’s or AESS | ERAS 56 |
This exam may be taken twice in the same academic year. Registration must be made no later than one week before the chosen date. The second registration for this exam implies the completion of all formalities (registration and payment).
You can download the registration form for the French language proficiency exam. The purpose of the exam is to verify that applicants are able to express themselves effectively during the course and its exams, and during their secondary education internships.
The exam will consist of two parts:
- written test: based on a presentation (around 15 minutes) or a text (two to three pages maximum) on a general subject, applicants will produce a continuous text summary (around 20 lines);
- oral test: a conversation centred on the subject of the written paper to verify that applicants have understood the presentation or original text and to assess their oral communication skills.
The exam is passed if applicants demonstrate that, in their oral and written communication, they have skills in the French language equivalent to level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, published by the Council of Europe (Decree of the Government of the French Community of 28 October 2010 relating to examinations of sufficient mastery of the French language in higher education).
However, to be eligible for the exams that after a year of study can lead to a “master didactique” (master's degree in education) or an “agregation” (AESS) in higher secondary education in modern languages and literature, the French exam is passed if applicants demonstrate competence at level B2 of the same reference framework.
Each year an undergraduate entrance exam is organised at UCLouvain in accordance with legal provisions. Passing this exam allows admission to an undergraduate course in all higher education institutions in the French-speaking Community of Belgium.
For admission to courses in civil engineering, medicine and dentistry, applicants must also pass a specific entrance or admission exam.
The certificate obtained after passing the undergraduate entrance exam is not equivalent to the CESS certificate of upper secondary education but is a bridge to higher education. You are advised to check with the institution where you intend to enrol which certificate it accepts.
You should also be aware that this certificate is not recognised by the National Employment Office (ONEm) as equivalent to a secondary education diploma entitling you to register as a jobseeker. You may be eligible for jobseeker allowances if you have passed the undergraduate entrance exam (even if you have not completed your undergraduate course), provided that you have previously spent at least six years (at whatever level) in an educational establishment organised, subsidised or recognised by the French-speaking, Flemish-speaking or German-speaking Community of Belgium.
More detailed information on the organisation of the 2024-2025 exams (programme, registration, timetable, regulations) will be available in due time.
