Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

At the end of the class, students should have acquired: - a general knowledge of the main schools of thought and of the major issues in the field of legal theory; - the ability to connect this theoretical knowledge to practical cases drawn from recent legal developments;  - the ability to develop, based on this practice-fed theoretical education, a critical reflection upon the law, its evolution, its premises and the expectations that it is vested with.

Content

The course involves a reflection on contemporary law or, more precisely, a theorisation, in the sense of problematisation, of the methods and foundations of law, highlighting the existing more or less modern, critical, and/or interdisciplinary perspectives.
The study will include the issue of the position of legal theory in the face of the major challenges of our century, including the globalization of societal functioning, the development of artificial intelligence, and climate change.
Aiming to develop both critical skills and knowledge of the main schools of tought and concepts in legal theory, this course builds on the knowledge acquired in courses on positive law, philosophy, and the humanities.

Teaching methods

The course is given ex cathedra, in a large classroom.

Evaluation methods

Written exam aimed at appraising both the students’ knowledge and his/her ability to carry out a critical reflection.
