Learning outcomes
At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |
The minimum level of English to be achieved at the end of the year is B1+ as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The courses as well as the work to be done at home by the student are an integral part of the mastery of the language at the level of lexicon and grammatical structures. In addition, they prepare students for the second year specialized language course. At the end of the course, the student should be able to grasp the general meaning of authentic texts and make a structured synthesis of them, while being able to explain passages dealing with important data. A dispensatory exam will be organized remotely via the ELAO platform in September; students who obtain a sufficiently high score on the written test will then have to take an individual oral exam, either in person or on Teams. This test will confirm (or not) the student's level of English and will allow the student to be exempted (or not). Details of how to register for the exemption test will be published on the valves and in the document “ La semaine de rentrée”. |

Content
As the course is primarily aimed at developing the ability to understand unsimplified texts, the content is taken from the press in English and deals with general topics, as well as issues relating to the social and legal organisation of society. These texts also serve as a basis for lexical extension, grammar review, oral synthesis exercises and conversation exercises.
Teaching methods
This is an interactive course, with a focus on continuous assessment.
As the course is interactive, it goes without saying that an effective and regular participation is required: preparation of exercises proposed by the teacher, active participation in class discussions.
It is imperative that students consult Moodle at least once a week and that they read ALL announcements posted.

Evaluation methods
The course assessment covers all the material covered in the course and includes:
A: a written examination in Q1, to be held out of term during the week of 16 December 2024 and worth 30% of the final grade. The examination covers the material seen in and the comprehension of an unpublished written document (not seen in class).
B: a written and oral examination in Q2. This is worth 70% of the final grade.
- The written part will take place out of term during the week of 5 to 9 May 2025 and is worth 40% of the final grade. The examination covers the material seen in class, the Grammar from Q2 and the comprehension of a new document (reading and/or listening).
- The oral part will take place during Q2 and is worth 30% of the final grade. The examination is based on an individual presentation of an article. Details and criteria are given in the Syllabus.
The student obtains a single mark for the whole year (in June: Q1 30% +Q2 70%).
If the student has not obtained an average of 10/20 in December, he or she will sit a single examination in May, which will include the material from both terms.
If the student has not obtained an average of 10/20 at the end of the year, he or she will sit an exam in August on the Q1 and Q2 material, with partial exemption for the parts previously passed during the same academic year. This exam consists of a written part (70% of the mark: Q1, 30%, Q2: 40%) and an oral part (Q2: 30% of the mark, in the form of an oral presentation to be prepared at home).
If a student is absent from any part of the assessment, he/she will receive a final mark of 0A. If the absence is justified by a medical certificate sent to the faculty administration within 24 hours, the final mark will be 0M. Students will have the opportunity to re-sit the examination, but only during the following session.
N.B. A dispensatory exam is organised on site using an online test in September; students obtaining a mark equal to or higher than 16/20 will be excused from the course for the year. Details of how to register for the exemption test will be published on the valves and the website (‘Semaine de la rentrée’ page).
It is imperative that students consult Moodle at least once a week and read ALL announcements.
Very important note:
Regarding the use of generative artificial intelligence (or any other online tool, e.g. translators, spelling and grammar checkers, ...):
The student must systematically indicate all parts where one or more AIs (or any other online tools) have been used, for example in a footnote. The student must specify whether the AI was used to search for information, to write the text, or to improve or correct it. The student should also mention the AI (or other online tool) used (ChatGPT, Bing, Bard, Chatsonic, DeepL, etc.) and the date on which it was used. Information sources must be systematically cited in accordance with bibliographic referencing standards. The student remains responsible for the content of his/her work, regardless of the sources used.
In order to ensure that the student's written work is personal, criteria such as originality, critical thinking, creativity and illustration with examples (e.g. from their own experience) will be taken into account.
Any behaviour by the student which prevents or attempts to prevent, in whole or in part, a proper assessment of his/her knowledge, skills and/or competences will be considered as an irregularity.
