Main themes
The topics addressed in class aim at arousing the undergraduates' interests in English-speaking countries' culture and history, both past and present.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

  • grasp the content and significance of articles and reports on topics connected with their interests or their jobs.

    Reading comprehension : level B1 of the 芦 Common European Framework of References for Languages 禄.

  • understand the gist of TV聽 programmes concerning general topics and oriented towards their fields of interest in standard and clearly articulated English language.

    Listening comprehension: level B1 of the 芦 Common European Framework of References for Languages 禄.

  • give their opinion on general topics (history, advertising, media, culture, ') covered in class.

Content
Portfolio of texts and videos: the set texts range from historic/al sources to today's specialized literature and vary in language registers to include prose, speeches, poetry, songs, video scripts, ... from several target-language countries.
Teaching methods
This course will be taught on site in groups of c.25 students (+ e-learning component).
  • Training learners to become autonomous readers of authentic written documents
  • Broadening the students' vocabulary scope
  • Teaching key grammar points such as tenses, auxiliaries, connectives and the passive voice.
  • Listening decoding strategies in a foreign language
  • Role plays, debates, discussions
  • English pronunciation and stress patterns.
As regards speaking skills, the emphasis will be on fluency rather than accuracy.

JUNE EXAM
Continuous assessment: 30%
January written exam (partim) : 20 %

- Pronunciation questions
If you fail this part of the exam, you鈥檒l do it again in June.
June written exam: 30% 聽or 聽50%
You passed the January exam (10+/20)
You failed the January exam (<10/20)
Your June written exam will be longer.

If you don鈥檛 take one of the exams (the written or the oral exam), you will not be given any mark and will be considered as Absent.
SEPTEMBER EXAM
Students will not be exempted for a part of the exam. If you take the September exam, you have to re-do the complete written exam (70%) AND the oral exam (30%). Your continuous assessment mark will not be taken into account.
If you don鈥檛 take one of the exams (the written or the oral exam), you will not be given any mark and will be considered as Absent.
Other information
Preparation, course attendance and active participation are compulsory.
Students are strongly advised not to put off asking for additional help if they feel they need it. An appointment can be made with their teacher to look into additional help for the course.聽
