At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

Designed with a resolutely trans-period perspective in mind, this course aims to provide a first foundation for the training of a generalist historian, from the perspective of methodical and reasoned information research. Various second-year courses allow us to consider the question of documentary resources in history in depth.
 
Content
The course starts with an overview of the different types of resources (secondary sources) as well as their evolution through time. It provides an introduction to the main principles of heuristic research : bibliographical reference systems, structure and functioning of a library, online databases, principles and uses of Open Access publications. The students are then introduced to the different categories of published works, their relevance and their use: encyclopedias and dictionaries, different types of bibliographies, monographs, journals; it also provides an introduction to published historical sources. The course has a large chronological focus, spanning from Classical Antiquity to the present time.
Teaching methods
In-person class, with practical sessions and individual exercises to be carried out in the university library.
The use of Artificial Intelligence softwares in written work or oral presentations, if demonstrated, will be penalised by a 0 T, as it contravenes scholarly and academic integrity.
Evaluation methods
Continuous assessment: written assignment (selected bibliography on a given theme) prepared throughout the term (40% of the final grade).
Final evaluation: written exam on theoretical aspects of the course material (30% of the final grade) and practical exam with personal notes and course material (30% of the final grade) to be taken during the exam session.
The final note is the summative assessment of the written assignment (component weighting: 8/20), the written exam (component weighting: 6/20) and the practical exam (component weighting: 6/20). Handing over each component of the final note is mandatory to pass this course. The written assignment (bibliography) must have 100 references to be considered for the final note.
