At the end of the course, students should be able to identify ancient forms (nature of the word, grammatical categories of case, gender etc.), to situate them in the morphological system to which they belong, how they were formed, what they have become today and how they function in the current morpho-syntactic system. Students should be able to explain historically many forms which apparently constitute "exceptions" in modern French. They should be sensitive to the variety of linguistic means used over time, and be able to observe and analyse phenomena of linguistic change in the contemporary language. They should be able to draw comparisons with the morpho-syntactic system of the other Romance language they use.
Students should have a different view of their mother tongue, perceive the relative character of linguistic phenomena, be sensitive to the difference between oral and written, between usage and norm, discern the phenomena of linguistic variation, reflect on the way language functions and evolves today.

Evaluation methods
