Content
This course sets out to simulate the realistic conditions of a translation project. Students will have to tackle the various steps of a Dutch-into-French translation project with professionalism, from order to delivery (i.e. administrative tasks, documentary and terminological research, translation, revision). Students will be asked to translate one or several texts dealing with the two specialized translation fields selected at the start of the academic year, among economic translation, legal translation and scientific/technical translation. Students can mix fields as they wish in their two C languages. The different tasks will be carried out in the computer lab, meeting specific deadlines and relying on various tools.
Using machine translation software during a translation exercise or exam is forbidden. Such software may only be used as a starting point for a post-edition exercise given by the teacher.
Scientific and technical translation workshop: Translation of scientific texts in real-life professional situation; presentation of the topic; technical explanations and comments; documentary and terminological research. The translation should be of usable quality for a specialised professional.
Legal translation workshop: Translation of business-oriented legal documents and texts. Exploitation and preliminary analysis of similar documents in French. Presentation of the opportunities for the (sworn) translator and the status of freelance translator.
Economic translation workshop: Translation of texts in the economic field, varying levels of difficulty, size and linguistic and writing skills. Professional situation.
Teaching methods
Compulsory workshops in the computer lab. We may have to switch to remote teaching methods, depending on how the COVID-19 situation evolves.
Evaluation methods
During the term: formative assessment.
January and August/September exam sessions : written examination (4 hours per specialized translation field).
The overall mark will be calculated by averaging the two marks. In case of an overall fail mark, the failed parts will have to be retaken during the August/September exam session. In case of an unjustified absence, students will have to retake the two translation workshops chosen during the August/September exam session.
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) must be used responsibly and in accordance with the practices of academic and scientific integrity. As scientific integrity requires that sources be cited, the use of AI must always be reported. The use of artificial intelligence for tasks where it is explicitly forbidden will be considered as cheating.
Scientific workshop : The use of AT as well as the use of AI ae forbidden.
Legal translation workshop : All resources are authorised (including MT and AI).
Economic translation workshop : The use of machine translation (MT) and/or artificial intelligence (AI) is possible provided that the teacher explicitly authorises it in her instructions. At the teacher's request, the student may be asked to indicate the use of MT and/or AI and to specify the tools used as well as the parts of the text concerned by the use of these tools.
