Main themes
This courses provides transversal competences to doctoral students ' i.e. competences that are useful to all researchers regardless of their specific topic and discipline. During this seminar, students will learn how to write a literature review, an academic paper; how to get published and how to present a research paper.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Contribution of the teaching unit to the AA framework of the programme :

ÌýAt the end of this seminar, the student will be able to:
  • prepare a research plan and an academic paper;
  • write a paperfollowing the academic standards;
  • review an academic paper;
  • deal with the reviewing process;
  • pitch his/her research;
present a research seminar.
 
Content
What makes a good research idea?
Designing your literature review (Searching for literature; Quality of journals; Writing the literature review)
Developing your research design (Conceptual model, hypotheses, methodology)
Writing your paper: what and how? (Structure of an academic paper; Writing an abstract; Writing the basic sections: data collection, findings, discussion, conclusion, limitations and future research; Positioning a research and defining contributions; Common mistakes of novice writers)
Publishing process (Soliciting for feedback; Developing research papers; Selecting an appropriate journal; Order of authors; Making the paper ready for submission)
Reviewing your paper
Presenting your research in a research seminar
Pitch your research to a non-expert audience
Teaching methods
The course will be organized around thematic sessions.
Students are expected to prepare the writing/reading assignment and think about the topics before each session. They are also expected to contribute in an informed, critical and innovative manner during the sessions.
Different exercises could be proposed to students such as:
  • published paper analysis;
  • formulating research title, aim, objectives, research questions;
  • writing an extended abstract;
  • reviewing abstracts written by other students;
  • presenting orally a working paper.
Evaluation methods
The assessment of your performance will be composed of the following elements:
  • Quality of the written extended abstractÌý(65%)
  • Quality of the oral presentation (20%)
  • Quality of your review and discussion of classmate extended abstracts (15%)
By submitting an assignment for evaluation:
- you assert that it accurately reflects the facts and to do so you need to have verified the facts, especially if theyÌýoriginate from generative AI resources;
- you assert that all your sources that go beyond common knowledge are suitably attributed;
- you assert that you have respected all specific requirements of your assigned work, in particular requirementsÌýfor transparency and documentation of process, or have explained yourself where this was not possible.
