Learning outcomes

The Master 120 in Journalism trains future journalists. Students who enrol have already mastered the foundations and theories of information and communication sciences. The aim of the Master 120 is to enable them to acquire a solid basic training and to specialise in areas of professional activity by choosing a major and options.
It offers :

specialised training in the field of journalism ;
a programme that combines theoretical, analytical and reflective mastery with high-level professional practice;
an integrated approach based on projects and productions, to be carried out individually or in groups, case studies and workshops;
a multi-disciplinary, reflective look at the challenges of journalism;
the opportunity to practise their skills in real-life conditions, thanks to field placement(s) and full weeks of practice in real-life situations;
the opportunity to spend part of their programme abroad.

On successful completion of this programme, each student is able to :

Competences specific to the "Louvain School of Journalism" final year
C-GCO-EJL1 - Master and deepen the theoretical approaches, critical analyses and innovative practices of journalism in terms of knowledge of current affairs, the history and sociology of journalism and the socio-economic challenges of information, including their organisational and management aspects.
C-GCO-EJL2 - Master and deepen the foundations, approaches and techniques of integrated multimedia journalism and of each media and demonstrate a high level of professional competence according to the options chosen with a view to the creation, organisation, production and dissemination of high-quality and innovative journalistic productions.
C-GCO-EJL3 - Master the methods and techniques of writing and constructing narratives and short- and long-term journalistic productions, taking care to address the issues of development, exploitation and profitability of these productions.

C-GCO-EJL4 - Master and deepen the knowledge and critical frameworks required to understand the socio-political issues surrounding information and the theoretical and practical issues involved in the legal, deontological and ethical regulation of the media.
C-GCO-EJL5 - Demonstrate a high level of professional competence in relation to their choice of option. 
C-GCO-EJL6 - Master the socio-economic context in which media companies operate, particularly in the fields of information and journalism, both in terms of the socio-political or economic environment in which the news media operate and the approach and knowledge of their audiences and their uses.
C-GCO-EJL7 - Master the concepts and tools relating to the management of media companies (editorial centres, audiences, usage, etc.).
C-GCO-EJL8 - Be able to evaluate, notably through personal or group work, the issues facing media companies in the digital transition, and in particular their editorial divisions.
C-GCO-EJL9 - Approach and explore the intersections between journalism and the social sciences.

Competences specific to the "Further study of journalistic practices" option


C-APP-1 - Acquire and develop an in-depth, detailed and critical knowledge of the mechanisms and challenges of journalistic investigation in the current media context.
C-APP-2 - Master the fundamental skills required for the thoughtful and relevant practice of reporting, while being able to articulate the various journalistic genres that can contribute to the writing and production of journalistic reports in their audio-scripto-visual forms.
C-APP-3 - Master and develop the journalistic skills and know-how of relevant research and critical verification of the information gathered.
C-APP-4 - Be capable of designing, developing and structuring the multimedia presentation of audio-scripto-visual elements specific to investigation and reporting.
C-APP-5 - Develop skills in the production and expressive strategy of information through the appropriate use of techniques - particularly narrative techniques - specific to reporting and investigative journalism.
C-APP-6 -Apprehend and understand the reflective practice of narrative journalism by situating the issues at stake within the framework of a critical redefinition of investigation and reporting.
C-APP- 7 - Be able to manage editorial issues relating to diversity.
C-APP-8 - Be able to apply concepts and tools relating to the management of media companies.

Skills specific to the "Journalistic innovations" option

C-INNJOUR-1 - Master the techniques of monitoring and curating public data (local, regional, national, European, international).
C-INNJOUR-2 - Master the techniques of monitoring and producing information using social networks.
C-INNJOUR-3 - Develop original ways of narrating and editing information produced on the basis of data and social networks.
C-INNJOUR-4 - Assess the suitability of the information produced within journalistic frameworks (legal, deontological, ethical).
C-INNJOUR-5 - Assess the discriminating nature of the information produced and its suitability for a market.

Skills specific to the "European Journalism" option

C-JOUREUR-1 - Acquire and deepen knowledge of European current affairs and the issues at stake.
C-JOUREUR-2 - Acquire knowledge of the processes involved in producing European information.
C-JOUREUR-3- Master the channels for disseminating and researching European information.

Demonstrate the ability to analyse critically and in depth journalistic practices, the media and the processes of information and communication in their complexity and interdisciplinary dimension.
Master and deepen the theoretical and methodological resources needed to take a reflective, relevant and informed look at journalism, communication and their contemporary upheavals.
Develop the profile of a cross-disciplinary, multi-skilled expert who understands the challenges of contemporary media culture and is capable of critical appraisal in different sectors of journalism and communication.
Prepare for a specific career as a researcher in the fields of journalism, communication and media analysis
Acquire and deepen cross-disciplinary knowledge of the various professional communication sectors (journalism, socio-educational and cultural fields, organisational communication, media analysis).
