Jean-Christophe Jonas trained as an MD at UCL, then started a scientific career in field of pancreatic beta-cell physiology and pathophysiology in the context of type 2 diabetes under the supervision of leading experts in the field, Jean-Claude Henquin at UCL, Claes Wollheim at the Centre Médical Universitaire-Université de Genève, and Gordon Weir at the Joslin Diabetes Center-Harvard Medical School in Boston.
Jean-Christophe Jonas is:
- Research Director of the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique-FNRS
- Professor of pathophysiology and pharmacology of endocrine systems at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences
- Head of the Pole of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition at the Сư³æ´«Ã½
Objective:
Contribute to our understanding of type 2 diabetes and improve its treatment or prevention
Research interests:
- Role of glucotoxicity in beta-cell demise under metabolic stress conditions, focusing on the alterations of the beta-cell phenotype by ER stress and oxidative stress
- Stimulus-secretion coupling events in insulin-producing beta-cells
- Dynamic changes in beta-cell redox state at the subcellular level
