Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this programme, each student is able to :

Acquis d'apprentissage 

I.    General and interdisciplinary knowledge as well as a solid cultural and intercultural background

  • The intercultural awareness required to understand, analyse and contextualise translation work
    • Expertise across a broad range of subjects and the desire to keep learning
    • A thorough understanding of the cultures (national and foreign) specific to each language in their historical, geopolitical, economic, legal, social and artistic dimensions
    • The ability to detect the socio-cultural components of an oral or written text
    • The ability to detect the allusions, stereotypes and intertextuality in an oral or written text

II.    The sets of skills which are specific to the field

  • The ability to use thematic knowledge
    • An understanding of specialist fields, jargons, social dialects and their specific terminology, in language A (mother tongue)
    • The ability to identify information and documentation needs
    • Expertise in the tools and techniques used in documentary and terminological research
    • Knowledge of the criteria for assessing the reliability of sources
    • The ability to use search engines and tools effectively
    • The ability to archive their own documents


III.    A grounding in the scientific method: academic skills

  • The ability to implement the theoretical and practical skills specific to translation and interpreting
    • Critical skills; adopting an objective attitude and 'stepping back' in order to resolve problems in the source text
    • An understanding of transposition techniques based on theoretical insights
    • The ability to analyse a complex or general text using analytical methods and the ability to summarise information (distinguish between the essential and the accessory)
    • Understand, store and use information efficiently
    • The ability to concentrate, persevere and respect deadlines

IV.    A command of written and oral communication: linguistic skills in their mother tongue and foreign languages

  • The ability to apply theoretical and practical linguistic knowledge in the field of translation
    • A perfect command of language A (mother tongue): the ability to use the language with a very high level of precision, both orally and in writing, in order to convey all the subtleties of meaning
    • The ability to work from two (foreign) C languages and achieve a level of authenticity equivalent to that of a native speaker in oral and written comprehension
    • The skills needed to put theory into practice
    • The ability to structure and update language skills
    • The ability to convey the message of the source text (oral or written) in another language
