Ability in using the adequate vocabulary in archeology and art history, in accomplishing a methodical research on an archaeological topic, in compiling a pertinent bibliography reported following the common standards. Ability in writing a descriptive, analytical and contextualized essay on an archaeological site or object, including typology, iconology and esthetic. Ability to illustrate a scientific report. |
Content
This course introduces the methods of analysis of an archaeological object or a work of art: description, documentary research, state of the questions, history of the work, comparisons and thematic study. It introduces the vocabulary of archaeology with the help of interactive tools, collaborative work and the support of tutors. It also introduces the historiographical basics of the discipline.
The course presents the types of bibliographic sources necessary for the study of archaeological objects and sites, with a guide to the working tools available on the Moodle interface. The systems of bibliographic references and abbreviations are presented in relation to each of these types (encyclopaedias, dictionaries, bibliographies, manuals, monographs, collections of works, periodicals, museum and exhibition catalogues, databases...).
It is accompanied by illustrated essays, with oral presentation, as well as field visits (sites, museums).

The activity is assessed in three ways:听
Each of these three methods of assessment counts for :
听
Students who are unjustifiably absent from one or more in-class or distance-learning practical sessions, who fail to submit one or more intermediate assignments, or who fail to submit their final oral or written assignment, are deemed to have failed the continuous assessment and may be refused registration for the June examination.
If the student fails the compulsory partial examination in January, he/she will sit an examination covering the whole subject in June. If he/she passes this partial examination, he/she will sit the examination on the second four-month subject and his/her two marks will be weighted for this part of the examination. If the student registers for the test a second time, he/she must sit the examination again, covering the subjects of the June examination and the January partial examination, whether or not he/she passed, as well as the end-of-year written work if the mark obtained for the latter is less than 50%. If the final assignment is invalidated, in accordance with the procedures set out in the assignment instructions, the June assessment will be deemed to have failed and the student will be invited to re-sit the assignment, as well as any other parts of the failed assessment. In the event of inadequate intermediate work (continuous assessment), a single alternative piece of work will be imposed and weighted at the total of the continuous assessment and the final piece of work (65%).

The use of Artificial Generative Intelligences (AI) will be strictly supervised in accordance with the instructions issued. It will be responsible and critical and will be carried out in accordance with the practices of academic and scientific integrity.
- continuous assessment, based on 5 intermediate assignments and in-class tests spread over the two terms, and the completion of exercises on Moodle;
- a research paper with an oral presentation in the first term, and a second research paper in the second term with an oral presentation and a written paper;
- a partial written examination and a final written examination respectively at the end of each four-month period, covering the material covered in the lectures and during the practical work sessions.
Each of these three methods of assessment counts for :

- 35% (of which 10% for Q1 and 25% for Q2)
- 35% (of which 20% for the January mid-term and 15% for the June exam)
