Musée L, the intersectoral technological platform MUSE and the Institute for the Study of Civilizations, Arts and Letters (INCAL), a universe in the making.

Musée L Musée L intérieur

The Musée L is a dynamic hub for research, teaching, and cultural mediation both within and beyond the university. As a university museum, it offers a wealth of resources for teachers, researchers, and students alike.

With its diverse and sometimes unusual collections, the Musée L is an exceptional tool for exploring and analyzing the materiality of the arts, culture, history, and the human sciences. The museum's materials lie at the intersection of various disciplines within the Humanities, including art history, archaeology, paleontology and physical anthropology, history, philology, social and cultural anthropology, political science and sociology, theology and religious studies, heritage management, cultural communication and mediation, and multilingual communication. These resources are intended to be actively engaged with and studied by members of the academic community.

This interdisciplinary framework offers promising opportunities and fosters the emergence of innovative research and educational projects. From 2018 to 2020, the project "Teaching and Research at the Heart of the Museum-Laboratory" facilitated connections between the museum and various stakeholders at UCLouvain, leading to the creation of interdisciplinary sub-projects, such as temporary exhibitions, cultural mediation initiatives, and innovative educational programs. These initiatives have not only enriched pedagogical practices but also contributed to the dissemination of complex knowledge to a broader audience.

Today, the Musée L has established itself as a significant player in UCLouvain's academic landscape, thanks to its integration into the intersectoral technological platform "MUSE." This platform, connected to INCAL, aims to strengthen interdisciplinary collaborations by fostering educational, cultural, and scientific projects that draw upon the museum's rich collections.

The Musée L invites teachers and researchers to take advantage of these exceptional resources to enrich their academic practices and initiate new research endeavors.

To effectively manage this entity rooted in the academic sector (see diagram), the MUSE platform has a Management Committee, which includes the president of INCAL, who is well-versed in the interactions to be developed with INCAL. A User Committee brings together the three sectors of UCLouvain, where SSH is represented by five academics from a diverse range of disciplines in the humanities. This committee is advisory and serves as a sounding board for the mutual expectations of the university community and the management of Musée L.

Finally, a Scientific Committee handles specific issues in areas as varied as acquisition policy, cultural programming, projects related to teaching, research and scientific publications, and sponsorship. The four-leaf clover representing this scientific committee indicates that its organization is flexible, adjusting its schedule to meet the requirements of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and those of UCLouvain.

These different roadmaps are adjusted within this committee in a logic of valuing the resources, skills, and expertise of each member. This committee is not decision-making; it reviews and provides opinions to the Management Committee, which is decision-making. The management of Musée L is a member of each committee and ensures coherence and fluidity. As you can see, the MUSE platform is building its operational methodology while initiating and implementing concrete projects. It aims to do so progressively and co-constructively to develop harmoniously. It is delighted to be able to count on creative and committed academics from INCAL.
