What is the difference between a “bridging” procedure and VAE?
The “bridging” procedure concerns students with a diploma issued by a higher education institution. These students can access some university master’s programmes automatically, depending on the diploma they have obtained. If you are already hold a higher education diploma, you are advised to check the possibility of a “bridging” procedure before starting down the VAE route.
VAE is a valuable pathway for adults with professional or personal experience that can be validated, and who lack the qualifications required for automatic access to the university course of their choice.

What are the conditions for benefitting from VAE?
For admission under the VAE procedure, you must demonstrate at least five years’ personal experience (e.g. in the voluntary sector) or professional experience (in employment or self-employment) in the area of study that you wish to access. Two years of completed higher education can be taken into account in these five years.
Admission through VAE is not automatic. It relies on an assessment (for example, a completed admission pack, written examination, portfolio, or oral examination) and follows the deliberations of an academic jury.

How much does a VAE procedure cost?
The VAE procedure itself is free. If the VAE approach to entry to a diploma course is successful, the cost of registering (the registration fee) will be the same as it is for any other student. In the case of admission through VAE for a certificate of further education, the cost will depend on the programme concerned (every certificate has different registration fees).
Do I need to have a diploma already?
No, no diploma is required. It is the nature of your experience that will determine the choice of course and any validation of this experience.
Does admission to a master’s programme through VAE mean that I receive a bachelor’s degree?
No. The VAE does not equate to a study cycle. At the end of a VAE entry procedure, you will have obtained authorisation to register for the course for which you have applied.
Is a VAE entry procedure valid for several courses and for several years?
No, a VAE entry application is only valid for a specific course and for one academic year.
I still haven’t identified the course that is right for my project, who can I talk to?
Careers advisers can help you to plan your education project at the three university sites. The information centre (CIO) (at Louvain-la-Neuve and in Brussels) and the student administration and support service (SASE) in Mons are there to help applicants to chose their courses.
You can contact them by email, on the telephone or by prior appointment. Their contact details are available under the heading ‘Who to contact’.

How and by whom can I be helped to prepare for VAE entry tests?
Every faculty has VAE contacts who are there to provide applicants with information about the admission and assessment procedures, and to help them, as far as possible, to prepare for the assessment. Their contact details can be found under the heading ‘Who to contact’.
What are the authorities authorised for the validation of learning from experience?
At the end of an assessment procedure, a jury of academics decide whether the student’s aptitudes and knowledge are sufficient to follow the course successfully.
As part of the VAE procedure, can I be forced to take additional courses?
It is possible, because this is a customised entry process, reflecting the value of your acquired skills and knowledge. Entry through VAE relies on an assessment. On this basis, a jury of academics decide whether the VAE applicant’s aptitudes and knowledge are sufficient to follow the course successfully. At the end of the assessment, the jury determines what additional instruction or exemptions that may constitute the supplementary access conditions for the VAE applicant.
Does the VAE procedure allow any exemptions?
Under certain conditions (at least five years’ experience that can be validated), VAE can enable you to access various university programmes (bachelor’s, master’s, specialist master’s, university certificate programmes) if you lack the necessary qualifications.
This personalised entry procedure is not automatic. It relies on an assessment that may take different forms depending on the course that you would like to access. Exemptions from part of a study programme can also be granted on the basis of knowledge and skills acquired through personal or professional experience in the course of the annual validation of the student’s programme.

Can a VAE applicant who has been rejected appeal against the jury’s decision?
In general terms, the decree authorises the government delegates and commissioners to receive appeals against jury decisions in matters of course registrations (article.95, § 1).
As a foreigner, am I entitled to apply for admission through VAE?
Yes, all students, including foreigners, are entitled to apply for admission through VAE.
However, it should be stressed than some registration deadlines apply specifically to foreign students (in the event of approval by the academic jury). This is because the closing date for registrations varies depending on your country of origin and your status as an international student or similar.

Can activities abroad be taken into account?
Yes, provided that it can be proven by documentary evidence (employment contracts, certificates, etc.), an activity abroad can be validated. The more detailed the information submitted about this activity (job profile, responsibilities, tasks, completed projects, etc.) the better placed the academic jury will be to assess the application correctly.
May the five years of professional activity consist of part-time work?
Every faculty and programme can set its own criteria for calculating the five years of experience. It is therefore possible that part-time professional experience can be validated.
Is there an age limit for introducing a VAE application?
No, there is no age limit for introducing a VAE application. The only crucial thing is to be able to validate at least five years of professional and/or personal experience.
Must I be in work to access the VAE procedure?
No, there is no requirement to be in work in order to apply for VAE. You just have to demonstration five years of experience relevant to the course in question.
If my professional experience is not recent, can I still have it validated?
The decree of 7 November 2013 defining the higher education landscape and the academic organisation of education does not specify how recent the experience should be. It is up to the academic jury to rule on the value of your experience. However, if your experience is too far in the past, some of your skills may no longer correspond to those expected at the end of today’s courses.
Does VAE apply to the higher secondary education certificate?
The higher secondary education certificate is only accessible to applicants with a 60 or 120 credit master’s degree (art.113, §2). Admission via VAE is therefore not possible in this case.
