You are one of 6,000 UCLouvain staff members. Every day, you contribute to fulfilling the missions of our university. Each and every one of you is its greatest strength. UCLouvain has adopted* a staff policy because it wants to create a quality working environment.
The text, validated by all of the institution’s bodies, is based on five pairs of values that are considered essential. These values are the fundamental pillars of how we operate, work, and live together within the university. They constitute an ideal to strive for , a course to maintain, together.

In accordance with legal requirements and by agreement with the union delegation, these values constitute the keystone for the principles, practices and tools that contribute to the management of all university staff.

1. Respect and valorisation
UCLouvain is committed to providing a work environment where respect for every staff member prevails. Each staff member must treat others and feel treated by others with consideration and dignity, regardless of staff category, rank or function.
UCLouvain also must recognise and value, in a variety of ways, the contributions of its employees to the achievement of its missions. While the hierarchical line plays a key role in this recognition and valorisation, every staff member is also responsible for it at their level.
2. Inclusion and recognition of diversity
UCLouvain aims to be an inclusive workplace, based on the recognition and valorisation of all diversities, i.e. gender, age, family situation, sexual orientation, current and future health condition, culture, social origin, education level, religious or philosophical conviction, etc. These diversities constitute the richness of our university community.
Equal opportunity is therefore a principle that UCLouvain is committed to upholding and promoting within the university. Thus the university strives to create a quality work environment where people understand, appreciate and value diversity. UCLouvain staff are expected to recognise this diversity and appreciate all of its facets; each staff member is responsible at their level for this inclusion.
3. Equity and clarity
UCLouvain is committed to ensuring that staff are treated fairly, both individually and collectively. The university strives to implement human resources management procedures and decisions which are fair, impartial and objective. The criteria underlying these procedures and decisions must be applied consistently across people and time.
Equity requires that staff be aware of, understand, and integrate the information upon which procedures and decisions are based. UCLouvain is therefore committed to providing clarity and legibility in the management of staff files, both collectively and individually, while safeguarding confidentiality. Such clarity, communicated at all university levels, is essential to the fruitful participation and involvement of staff in the university community and university life.
4. Competence and development
UCLouvain’s proper functioning is based on staff competence, which guarantees the quality of the services provided to society by the university and contributes to its reputation. As such, staff competence is at the core of every principle, practice and tool of human resources management within the university.
UCLouvain is also responsible for maintaining and developing competence throughout staff careers in all staff categories. It is committed to offering staff the opportunity to develop professionally and to supporting their development so they can achieve their full potential within the framework of their activities and missions. While the hierarchical line plays a key role in the development of competence, each staff member is also responsible for it at their level and throughout their career at the university.
5. Commitment and responsibility
UCLouvain expects all staff to be committed to their work, one another, and, more generally, the various university stakeholders, regardless of function. Staff are accountable for their actions and behaviour and must be fully engaged and involved in the (internal and external) services that are provided.
UCLouvain acknowledges that in order to foster commitment and responsibility among its staff, it must provide work conditions that contribute to a professional environment that can be collectively considered fulfilling and satisfying. In particular, it strives to provide, through the management and leadership of its hierarchical line, meaningful activities and missions, stimulating projects, and fair treatment.
